Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed and UCLA AIDS event

Dear Teammates,

Cheryl and I viewed the movie, “Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed,” last week. It’s amazing that in our country, scientists and professors are not free to explore ideas and evidence, if they raise the possibility of God, or a god.

This movie does a lot to explain what some of the professors that we work with encounter. In fact, we know some of the professors who are interviewed. I think that the most important point is that this is not a conflict over science, but rather between philosophies. One philosophy does not allow the possibility of God, or a god. The other says to let the evidence lead wherever it may, including the possibility that God exists and is the best explanation for the evidence. Intelligent Design is not the only alternative to Darwinism, and Christians in the sciences disagree about it, but I recommend seeing the movie.

We are learning that another major stumbling block for the Gospel is the area of social justice. Christians have been accused of being interested in a person’s salvation, but not AIDS, chronic poverty, human trafficking (modern day slavery), inequalities in the workplace that women face, and institutionalized racism, among other things.

Last month, one of the Christian professors at UCLA spoke to the Campus Crusade student group on the history and biblical basis for Christian involvement in social justice issues. This was in preparation for a special event. The next week, several Christian student groups worked together to sponsor an AIDS awareness tent and speakers. Students went through the tent with an audio guide of the life of one of three children who had been orphaned by AIDS. Over 15 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. As students and faculty exited the tent, they were given an opportunity to discuss their reactions to what they had just seen and heard with trained Christian students. It was very natural to enter into spiritual discussions.

Around 800 students went through the tent, and the student paper, the Daily Bruin, ran a front-page article. We’re very excited about this new outreach, and that it expresses that Christians are concerned about suffering in the world.

Thank you for your partnership in addressing the ideas that shape our society!

Please pray:

For wisdom and courage for Christian professors who face persecution for their faith

For innovative ways to address justice issues that can open doors for the Gospel

That the Lord would bring each professor, He wants to attend, to the National Faculty Leadership Conference in Washington DC, June 27-29, 2008.

Thanks!
